Double podium for Marc Alcoba in Navarra and best results of the season for Khouri and Alqubaisi
The Spanish Superbike Championship (ESBK) is back after the summer break and the Navarra circuit was the venue for the opening of the second part of the season.
The Andotrans Team Torrentó arrived at this event with the great novelty of Marc Alcoba in the SBK 1000 category. The young rider from Alcanar returns to the Lleida-based team with which he was already champion in 2018, but this time to race in the premier class. Australian rider Harry Khouri and Qatari rider Abdulla Alqubaisi will compete in the Supersport Next Generation 600 category.
All three riders showed good pace in practice on Thursday and Friday, especially Alqubaisi, and their times suggested they could be among the front runners.
Saturday saw qualifying and the first races. In the SBK category Alcoba’s qualifying was good with 4th place, but in the race he was even better. The Tarragona rider kept a good pace from start to finish and the reward was a 3rd place finish in his comeback race.
The same result in Sunday’s race. This time in very different conditions: heavy rain. The start was delayed because it started to rain just as we were leaving for the grid and the teams had to reconfigure the bikes against the clock. Alcoba, with a great start, took first place and fought all the way to defend the podium. Two great third places.
In the Supersport Next Generation race on Saturday, Khouri and Adbulla achieved their best results of the season. Starting from 12th and 18th on the grid respectively, ambition was the key to two good and hard-fought finishes: 11th and 13th. Sunday’s race, on the other hand, was not so positive: two retirements due to the wet track. The two starts were very good, especially that of Alqubaisi, who was 8th when he crashed. Nevertheless, the two riders are in good shape.
The Andotrans Team Torrentó starts the second half of the year with good sensations and positive results. The next round of the Spanish Superbike Championship will be held at the Circuito de Jerez Ángel Nieto on the weekend of 14th and 15th October.
